A Brief History of NFD 2
The Niskayuna Fire Company was organized in 1942, after a number of serious fires. A group of Home Guards and Air Raid Wardens recognized the need for fire protection in the south east part of town.
Our first engine was a 1939 Chevy Truck which was converted to a Fire Engine by the members. The first "station" was a barn on Lishakill Road. In 1948 a station was constructed on Rosendale Road, and two new Ford Fire Engines were purchased. In 1953 a station was built on Troy Road, at the site of our current station. By 1992, we had outgrown out two small stations. Construction began on our new station, and we moved in in 1993.
Currently We have over 45 members, who are all volunteers, and over 20 are trained to provide emergency medical care.
From the Office of the Chief:
I would like to start out by saying thank you to all those who are viewing our new web site. For anyone who remembers our old one it was a little outdated and we want to liven it up some.
We had another record year of over 600 calls for 2005, a little down from 2004, but still up there. The majority of our calls are “Medical/EMS” in nature but we did have a couple of working fires.
Niskayuna Fire Dist. #2 has been going through some changes; we have a real good core of officers again this year, and hope to better our selves in 2006. This year we have already scheduled three live fire training sessions to take place at the Guilderland training center and will be visiting the Stratton Air guard base for some “Survival” training.
As always we are looking for new members, we have recently voted in three already this year and hope more will come. Remember, this is a 100% volunteer Fire department that serves roughly 2500 homes in the town.
If you would like more information on joining please feel free to stop by or call our station. You can also request information via our contact page. Once again thanks for visiting.
